Lifting The Veil is a work that crosses boundaries between historical and upmarket fiction, and fantastical realism. It begins the tale of Taliba, a young woman raised by her father and extended family in a close-knit caravan of wandering Roma. Her life is forever changed when she begins to see the spirits that most people don’t realize surround us. Vadoma, a respected drabardi, takes the girl under her wing and guides her education in the ways of the spirits and how to let them touch the world through her.
Visions of suffering and death threaten to drive Taliba to madness, and a message from one of the spirits leads her to part with her caravan to pursue what some think is an impossible dream: a place beyond pain and sorrow. As her world expands, she must deal with the unknown without advice for the first time.
An open heart can become both a strength and a vulnerability. Few in the world share this profound gift, and some of them are not what they seem. The young Romani must use all her senses and her spirit bonds to survive as she encounters others who seek a world without strife...but at what price?
